Job Purpose

The Paint Shop Lead Hand is responsible for painting steel according to the work order and providing leadership and workflow to the Spray Painters, Sandblasters and Wheelobrator Operators.

Responsibilities

  • Displays a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
  • Facilitate a strong safety culture and is accountable for the safety of their crew by understanding the legal responsibilities of their leadership role and ensuring all crew members apply the standards for safe working conditions and are fit for duty each day.
  • Knows, understands, communicates and ensures compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Waiward’s safety policy’s, safe work practices, procedures and rules.
  • Use the overhead crane to lift finished items into the paint area.
  • Schedule production and ensure completion of divisions.
  • Work effectively with Project Managers on specifications of material.
  • Understand customer specifications and product data sheets.
  • Ensure efficiency and productivity of work team.
  • Verify adequate and suitable safety equipment, including mandatory PPE, and ensure it is supplied and properly used and maintained.
  • Review job hazard assessments with team prior to commencement of a job.
  • Conduct daily and weekly safety meetings and inspections.
  • Assess and confirm through documentation, each team member’s competency.
  • Participate in and provide incident reports for all incidents in the investigation process.
  • Understands the procedures applicable to your area of work as documented in Waiward’s Quality Assurance Manual.
  • Ensure follow up and closure of all NCR’s created by your crew.
  • Participate in the HSE Safety Incentive Program by completing an SI card on a daily basis.
  • Communicate clearly to Leadership and Human Resources when individuals are not following Waiward’s policies, rules, or are not participating with an acceptable level of safety involvement, quality, or productivity.
  • Ensure timecards are properly filled out and allocation of hours to jobs are correct.
  • Ensure housekeeping in your area is kept at an acceptable level.
  • Where workload requires, be willing to work on the tools from time to time.
  • Willing to work overtime when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent.
  • 5 to 7 years of supervisory experience within the Steel Industry is required.
  • 5 to 7 years’ experience with industrial coatings is an asset.
  • Certified NACE Level 2 is required.
  • Experience with the operation of equipment such as a Wheelobrator, airless spray equipment, and manual hose sand blasting.
  • Confined Space and Fall Protection certificate is considered an asset.
  • Certified Overhead Crane Operator preferred (can be internally delivered).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Exceptional mentoring and multi-tasking skills that are complemented by effective interpersonal, oral and written communication.
  • Motivated individual who is effectively able to lead a team within a fast-paced environment.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract is a requisite.
  • FLHA Training is required.
  • WHMIS

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in the fabrication shop with moderate noise and exposure to numerous hazardous fumes.

 

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing paint specifications for extended periods of time; viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and will require good physical attributes for walking on uneven ground, climbing, confined space entry, limited lifting, and sitting.
