Job Purpose

The Construction Estimator plays a critical role within the Waiward Estimating Team, supporting the Construction & Maintenance operations team through expert evaluation of RFPs. This position is responsible for identifying labour, material, and subcontractor requirements to ensure successful project execution and to strengthen proposal submissions.

Responsibilities

  • Display a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Structural, Piping, Mechanical, and Maintenance RFPs.
  • Exercise due diligence in reviewing and interpreting RFP documents and project requirements.
  • Prepare accurate quantity take-offs and detailed cost estimates in accordance with company standards.
  • Develop construction sequences and execution steps based on client-provided documentation.
  • Collaborate with Operations to develop project execution strategies, including construction planning, crew sizing, and equipment allocation.
  • Confirm resource availability and capacity with internal teams to ensure alignment with project schedules.
  • Support the transition from estimate to budget, ensuring accuracy and continuity.
  • Participate in pre-award discussions and negotiations to ensure contract terms align with company requirements.
  • Contribute to process optimization initiatives with a focus on continuous improvement and efficiency.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, clients, and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (degree, diploma, or certificate) in a related field, or a Journeyperson certification combined with 10+ years of experience in industrial construction or maintenance, specifically within Structural Steel and/or Piping and Mechanical disciplines.
  • Self-motivated team player with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities, supported by strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
  • Solid understanding of construction terminology, as well as scheduling and planning concepts.
  • Working knowledge of construction planning and scheduling best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and planning/scheduling software, such as Primavera P6.

Working Conditions

 

  • Hybrid working environment, combining office-based or remote working arrangements with regular attendance in the office, as dictated by operational requirements.
  • May require the incumbent to walk stairs; be outside inclement weather (slippery surfaces and cold); carrying objects, driving and being exposed to normal office routines.

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time, and extensive reading.
  • The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
