Job Purpose

The Construction Estimator is a critical position within the Waiward Construction Estimating Team and supports the Construction & Maintenance operations team through expert RFP evaluation, identifies labour, material and subcontractor requirements to successfully execute the project and to bolster the proposal submission.

Responsibilities

  • Displays a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
  • Displays familiarity with Structural, Piping, Mechanical, and Maintenance requests for proposals (RFPs).
  • Exercises due diligence when reviewing RFP documents.
  • Prepares detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates as per company standards.
  • Creates detailed construction sequence/steps derived from client provided documentation.
  • Develops project execution strategies in conjunction with operations including but not limited to; construction step listing, crew sizing, and assigning equipment.
  • Confirms resource availability and capacity with Waiward’s Operational team to meet project schedules.
  • Assists in Estimate to Budget conversions.
  • Participates in pre-award negotiations to ensure that contracts offered comply with the terms and conditions.
  • Assists in the optimization of processes to achieve results with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Builds formal and informal relationships inside and outside the organization.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education: degree, diploma, or certificate in related field, or a Journeyperson certificate with 10+ years of Industrial Construction or Maintenance industry experience, specifically in the Structural Steel, and/or Piping and Mechanical field(s).
  • A team player who is self-motivated and has strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills that are complemented by effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
  • Strong understanding of construction terms, scheduling and planning concepts.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and in an appropriate style.
  • An understanding of construction planning and scheduling best practices.
  • Proficient in MS Office and Planning/Scheduling software (P6).

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in an office environment with moderate noise. The job may require the incumbent to walk stairs; be outside in inclement weather (slippery surfaces and cold); carry objects, drive and be exposed to normal office routines.

 

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
