Job Purpose

The Piping and Mechanical Estimator reports directly to the Contracts Director and is responsible for performing all facets of an industrial work estimate including quanitites, costing, and sub-trade analysis for presentation, and final review of major items.


  • Display a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
  • Accountable for the preparation, accuracy, compliance and timeliness of all bid submission documents.
  • Assess and interpret all tender submission documentation, including terms and conditions, highlighting risk and opportunity and incorporating into bid development.
  • Review and incorporate applicable historical data such as previous Rates of Placement, local productivity, relevant lessons learned and site visit feedback into bid submission documents.
  • Accountable for the inclusion and support of a resource loaded schedule into bid submission documents.
  • Accountable for issuing, leading and reviewing subcontractor “Request for Quote” submittals.
  • Accountable for project cost analysis and maintaining historical cost data.
  • Calculate the total cost of construction and incorporate into the bid submission.
  • Support the facilitation and preparation of Project Execution Plans.
  • Communicate with the client and technical staff as required.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Successful completion of post secondary education – diploma as a minimum.
  • 5-7 years experience in estimating, preferably a range of mechanical and piping with a substantial portion of experience with an industrial contractor.
  • ASET designation is a benefit, however not necessarily required.
  • Must specialize in the complete preparation of an estimate; including quantity takeoffs, pricing, forming systems, scheduling, construction technique and logistics.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction material and techniques.
  • Comprehension of general terms and conditions.
  • Experience in evaluating and executing unit rate and fixed price contracting strategies.
  • Experience in unit and fixed price tender assembly with the assessment and management of estimate and project.
  • Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills that are complimented by effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make timely and objective decision, while displaying a strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in MS Office software.

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in an office environment and frequent all construction sites with moderate noise when required. The incumbent will also be required to work a flexible work schedule to visit construction sites and to ensure submission deadlines.


Physical Conditions

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing assembly specifications for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and site for extended periods of time and communicate with piping and mechanical employees regularly.
